Punjabi is the most commonly spoken language among British Asians, followed by Urdu (mainly among Pakistanis), Hindi and then Gujarati and Bangali. These languages are commonly spoken in the home, but the ability to read and write is diminishing rapidly, especially among younger, second and third generation Asians.
Among Black Africans the most common languages are Yoruba, Ibo, Swahili and Twi.
A vast majority of Black people and those of mixed backgrounds describe themselves as Christian.
Among other faiths the largest groups are Pakistani Muslims (658,000), Indian Hindus (467,000) followed by Sikhs (301,000), Bangladeshi Muslims (260,000), and White Jews (252,000). About 10 percent of the Black African population are Muslims.
British Indians and Black Africans are almost twice as likely to have a university degree. Around 31 percent of Indians are educated to degree level.
Indian girls followed by Indian boys and Black girls have shown to achieve the best GCSE results.
